HACK 5.3 Backhaul booking

LEARNING TO BOOK BACKHAULS

Backhaul: The return trip a truck or cargo ship makes after making a delivery.

Booking backhauls can be both easy and hard depending on the broker you are dealing with and the lane you need to go in after the original load drops. Below you will find a few examples of how to ask for a backhaul from the broker you are booking from. You will also find techniques to use from the load board to book backhauls and create lanes to get your driver home for home time.

Once you have found a good load for your carrier, the next thing you want to do is go into the load board search to find a load that will give your carrier a backhaul. Most times you will have to accept less than or right near market rate for the backhauls, don't spend a lot of time on trying to push to hard on the brokers when booking a backhaul, you want to move that truck as quick as you can to get the driver back home also making some money for the move and fuel.

Broker Kyle: Hey Sean I have a load that p/u in Cleveland, TN Monday 10-06-2020 (fcfs )and delivers in Savannah, Ga on 10/07/2020 (fcfs). The rate on this load is $2250 do you have a empty truck for this load?

Dispatcher Sean: Hey Kyle yes I have a truck that will be empty tonight and ready to roll tomorrow for this load, but we need a backhaul back to Atlanta or a load that will bring us near.

Broker Kyle: Let me check and see what we have for you Sean, hold on a sec.....

Hey Sean yes we have a load that picks up in Savannah, Ga same day same location, since this is a fcfs facility he can get loaded when he is done dropping this load. The backhaul is paying $1975 is that ok with you?

Dispatcher Sean: Yes that will be fine send over the rate cons for Jones and Jones trucking MC# 123456 thanks a bunch.

Broker Kyle: No thank you Sean, I will have it to you in a few.

Congratulations you just booked a great load for your carrier. Try and be consistent as possible with good loads and your carrier will reward you.

BACK HAUL BOOKING WITH LOAD BOARDS ARE VERY EFFECTIVE

If the broker you are booking with does not have a backhaul or a reload for your driver your best option outside of your brokers list is the load board. Even if the load does not drop until two days you can still book the load the same day for two days out. If you wait its a chance you won't get a load back or a reload.

The most effective way to ensure a backhaul for your carrier is pre planning the load before the original load. You can get in front of this curve by booking 2days out, that gives you more time on the load to find a backhaul for your carrier.

As a dispatcher you have to ensure your driver is there on time and consistent when you are working with the same broker. This is a sure fire way to get back hauls almost immediately or maybe even a dedicated lane if your carrier or driver is interested in the numbers the lane will make for the truck.
